The Vocal Constructivists seek to liberate experimental music from the strait-jacket of an expected sound world. Their playful interpretations make graphic notation accessible to established and new audiences alike. Their repertoire celebrates pieces composed using eccentric symbols, glyphs, and visual design. All musical decisions are made by members of the group, worked out in collaboration. Composers work closely with the group. The combination of sung performance, body percussion, and dance movement yields unique interpretations of musical works.
Iris started performing with the Vocal Constructivists in November 2012 when they were invited by the multi-talented Kasia Sobucka to participate in Deconstruction Project’s Jazz and Experimental Music From Poland 2012 Festival at The Forge, London.
The programme included works by Boguslaw Schaeffer (b. 1029). The Deconstruction Project commissioned a work for them by a young, charismatic Polish composer, Jan Duszynski (b. 1976). Other composers were Kasia Glowicka (b. 1979) and Andrzej Koszewski (b. 1922).
The Vocal Constructivists always display the scores as they perform. In the Forge, we used the projector to show images and facsimiles of the autograph manuscript so the historical journey was visual as well as aural. Iris is part of a new recording made in November 2013 with the Vocal Constructivists recording compositions form composers such as Cardew, Applebaum, Redhead and Kuivilla.
